A professional teeth whitening treatment is totally worth the investment for a bright, white, confident smile — but it doesn’t necessarily come cheap, either. If you’ve recently undergone in-office or take-home teeth whitening in Burlington, Dr. James Kostas and our team want you to protect your investment with these three simple tips for keeping your smile pearly white! Follow closely and you just may never need teeth whitening again.
#1: Drink Through a Straw (Or Ditch Dark Bevs Altogether)
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that frequent exposure to dark beverages like colas, coffee, and black tea will gradually change the shade of your tooth enamel. We don’t expect you to completely eliminate these drinks from your diet. (We all need a nice cup of coffee in the morning!) Instead, try picking up a straw to go with your iced coffee or afternoon diet soda. Drinking through a straw prevents the beverage from hitting your tooth enamel and causing stains. If you’d prefer to save the environment from the extra pieces of plastic, then maybe it’s time to consider switching out coffee for green tea and ditching everything else for water. Your body will thank you for it, too.
#2: Brush and Floss Like It’s Your Job
As your favorite dental team, we are constantly reminding patients about the importance of regular brushing and flossing. And guess what? After you’ve received a teeth whitening treatment, it’s more important than ever to maintain that beautifully bright smile. Start brushing your teeth right after you eat or drink something that’s got a rich shade (like dark chocolate, craft beer, wine, ripe berries, etc.). If you can’t brush in some situations, at least rinse your mouth out with water to wash away staining agents. Thoroughly clean your teeth at night, including proper flossing, to prevent the plaque buildup and tartar that turns your teeth yellow.
#3: Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Your teeth look and feel so good after a visit to the dentist, and that’s how they should be all the time. To keep your smile bright after a whitening treatment, make sure you schedule and attend two checkups and cleanings per year. When you do, we will remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surface of your teeth and around the gums. Your hygienist will also run a polisher over your teeth to make them sparkle once again. And if you do decide it’s time for another teeth whitening treatment to touch up your smile, we can schedule one when the time works best for you!
